No whiffing

In game design, there's a rule (at least, this is how I remember it) that says 'No whiffing'. Don't let a player do something that'll be boring or have a non-result.

The same should go for (program) user interface design - don't allow the user to do anything wrong - or useless/boring! See Jeff Atwood's (2009) post on fun error messages, for instance.

I just noticed Janko has a recent post that takes this one step further - don't make any functionality on your UI useless/boring. HELP YOUR USER out. So, as Janko explains: validation, which can be seen as limiting a user, instead becomes a boon.

Oops. New Cooler Master needed.

While working on the problem below, the power supply started resembling a coffee grinder. Now switching to a Cooler Master Silent Pro M 600W. Hope that works well.

Edit/Update: and it does! Never had such a silent computer.

Edit/Update2: I did have to do something else: I had pulled the CPU fan off the CPU to clean it, and stuck it back without new paste. Running REALLY hot. Added some paste back in, and now it's silent AND fast.
